About this book

The History of Freedom, and Other Essays is by John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton, First Baron Acton, and appeared in a first edition in 1907 with a reprint in 1909. One piece describes a man whom facetious friends called the weather-cock, or Mr. Facingbothways, because there was no heartiness in his judgments. The writer of that piece says: “In time I discovered that it was the perfection of a developed character.”

One essay says that the danger lies not in the doctrine, but in the practice, and that the Christians were the best subjects of the emperor, but Christianity was really subversive of the fundamental institutions of the Roman Empire. Quoted extracts printed in the book include the words Verbum Dei volo et hoc solum, quaeso et quidem indubitatum, ut dogma fiat.
