About this book
The account describes privileges allowed to certain prisoners, including invitations to dine with the governor and walk in his gardens in excellent company. Some prisoners were allowed to leave the fortress on condition that they returned in the evening, while others could remain outside all night. Prisoners who had servants could have those servants attend them if the servants were willing to share their captivity.
The discussion of food reports that the prisoners were unanimous in declaring their meals abundant and good. Dumouriez recalls having five dishes at dinner and five at supper, without counting dessert. Voltaire was sent to the Bastille a second time in April, 1726, according to the account of his detention.
