About this book
Joan of Arc is by Lord Ronald Gower, F.S.A. The dedication says that on the pedestal of the bronze statue, which the author's mother placed in her house at Cliveden, are inscribed those words which sum up the life and career of the Maid of Orleans. The text regrets that no portrait of Joan of Arc exists either in sculpture or painting, and says all the portraits of Joan painted in oils are spurious.
Joan stands before the knight of Vaucouleurs and tells him boldly that she has come to him by God's command and is destined to give the King victory over the English. Beaupère is ordered to cross-examine the prisoner, begins by asking when she had last eaten, and hears that it was not since yesterday at mid-day.
