About this book
Thomas A. Janvier collected Legends of the City of Mexico, which is illustrated with six pictures by Walter Appleton Clark and by photographs of place. Joséfa Correa, who during four successive winters at once was a washer-woman and a friend, is called the best of authorities for the current popular versions of the folk-stories of the city. The writer says all of these women would have been sealed books to him, and that he could have got nothing from them without his wife's help.
In the legend of the Callejón del Padre Lecuona, the teller does not know who Padre Lecuona was or what he did or had done to him in the street that caused his name to be given to it. The teller says Padre Lanchitas deserved to be loved because he himself loved everybody, and freely gave to all in sickness or in trouble his loving aid. A note says a motive is among the most widely distributed of folk-story motives, and that in The Arabian Nights it is found repeatedly in varying forms.
