About this book
An Idyl of the East Side is by Thomas A. Janvier. Andreas Stoffel is introduced as second to none in the matter of raising canary-birds, birds taught to sing with a sweetness nothing short of heavenly. Christine is said to have her home in America, which the text calls that distant America where already his father's brother dwelt.
An adventurous uncle is said to have prospered amazingly in the twenty years of his American exile, rising from a young man of all work in a delicatessen shop in New York to owner of the business. Roschen is described as singing while at her work in a little room that was their kitchen and dining-room and parlor all in one. Ludwig Bauer, a young shoemaker who lives next door but one, says that Roschen herself is sweeter and better than all the angels in Paradise combined. In one exchange Andreas answers that for him it will not be long, and asks that the care meant for him be given to his birds.
