About this book
A Romance of Tompkins Square is by Thomas A. Janvier. The opening raises questions of how honey, flour and dough are handled in making lebkuchen, and says all these several matters are enshrouded in a mystery that is penetrated only by the elect few of Nürnberg bakers by whom perfect lebkuchen is made. Three times a sum almost sufficient had been saved when it was diverted from buying the honey that Gottlieb needed to begin his lebkuchen career.
The first savings were swept away through the conquest of Ambition by Love, and Love is personified in one Minna Schaus. One evening Gottlieb tells at home of Hans Kuhn's upstart pretensions, and his statements are received with an ominous silence. A passage has the good Hedwig say, "Come, Hans," her voice shaken by emotion.
