About this book
John Dewey, listed on the title page as assistant professor of philosophy in the University of Michigan, offers a critical exposition of Leibniz's New Essays Concerning the Human Understanding. The study includes an account of Leibniz's boyhood, with his reading in his father's library and his entry into the University of Leipzig in 1661 at fifteen, and it quotes Leibniz saying that he was self-taught.
Other passages discuss a kingdom of monads, the principle of continuity, and Leibniz's phrase 'uniformity of nature', which he explains as uniform in variety. Dewey also takes up time and space as ideal, saying that for Leibniz a relation is not a material bond running through objects but exists in the mind.
