About this book

Letters and Journals of James, Eighth Earl of Elgin is credited to James Bruce Elgin. The heading lists the titles Governor of Jamaica, Governor-General of Canada, Envoy to China and Viceroy of India, and names Theodore Walrond as editor and Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, Dean of Westminster, as writer of a preface. The preface says it was thought that a career intimately connected with so many critical points in the history of the British Empire ought not to be left without an enduring memorial.

The text says that towards the end of 1842 a new tariff was enacted by the legislature of the island, and that an angry despatch from Downing Street informed Lord Elgin that it was disapproved. The text describes fields of which about one-half are covered with water and the other half in crop, and barren hills with patches here and there of Chinese cultivation and fir plantations, the first the writer has seen in China. The text says Lord Elgin proceeded by railway from Allahabad to Cawnpore, where on the 11th of February he took part in the impressive ceremony of the consecration of the Well.
