About this book
The dedication presents the book as an account intended to illustrate the earliest travels of James Bruce and make a portion of his collection of drawings known. The explanation of the illustrations says that photographic processes permit the drawings to be presented as actual facsimiles. The selection generally favours drawings believed to have been made by Bruce himself on the spot.
The discussion of schools says that, like mosques, the buildings are considered sacred from intrusion by Christians, although several interiors could be seen from the road. The description of wall hangings records the use of appliqué work on coloured cloth and velvet.
