About this book
Letters on Astronomy explains the elements of astronomy in connection with biographical sketches of astronomers, and the title page announces numerous engravings. The explanation of celestial coordinates relates right ascension and declination to terrestrial longitude and latitude, distinguishing these measurements from those referred to the ecliptic. The account defines celestial latitude as distance from the ecliptic measured on a secondary to that circle.
The discussion of tides attributes primitive tides to the unequal action of the sun and moon upon different parts of the earth. The argument against daily revolution of the starry firmament around the earth calls the implied speed wholly incredible.
