About this book

A visit to a Quaker near London begins with a meal and becomes a dispute about baptism, courtesy and what it means to be a Christian. Voltaire lets the exchange expose the habits each speaker takes for granted. These letters examine eighteenth-century English religion and intellectual life through particular encounters and arguments, giving abstract disagreements the shape of conversation.

The discussion of Newton and Descartes brings the same questioning approach to science. Voltaire compares their reputations and circumstances, challenges exaggerated claims made for Newton, and credits Descartes with advances in geometry while finding fault with his hypotheses. Readers interested in the history of ideas can see how judgments about thinkers become entangled with national pride. The letter form keeps the focus on a speaking, opinionated observer rather than an impersonal survey.
