About this book
A comparison between steam engines becomes a dispute about human thought in Mark Twain's opening essay. An older speaker argues that inherited traits, education and outside influences determine a person's abilities and opinions. His younger companion resists, testing the argument through reflection, personal credit and artistic creation. Their alternating challenges and replies give the philosophical discussion the pace of a conversation, while leaving room for disagreement about what people can claim as their own.
Elsewhere, close observation gives way to comic invention. A view of the Jungfrau from the Victoria Hotel prompts descriptions of mountain shapes and shifting light, followed by an improbable account of Irish kings and a missionary. The contents also include pieces about classroom language, alphabet reform, a bee, bicycle riding and literary authorship. This range makes the collection useful for readers who want to explore how Twain moves between abstract argument, travel impressions and humor drawn from ordinary interests.
