About this book

The preface describes a collection of principal speeches made within the preceding four years, chosen to present a consistent and simultaneous view of the general field of British politics. The preface says the speeches have undergone compression and verbal correction to make them easier to read, with facts and figures revised where necessary. One speech claims agreement across races, parties, classes, and sections in South Africa on abandoning representative government and proceeding directly to responsible government.

Another speech contrasts strict discipline for wealthier young people until eighteen or nineteen with the mass of the nation running wild after fourteen. The discussion of young workers says almost every available form of employment offers no opening or usefulness in adulthood, and calls many such working lives harmful.
