About this book
Life and Literature by John Purver Richardson has a passage about a rescue at sea and, elsewhere, numbered sayings. In the rescue, the captain signals the engine room and tells the second officer to lower the gig, Mrs. Pierrepont stands on the bridge with Captain Hood, and her husband swims out to the captain's child. The child is brought back shivering and is soon in dry clothes in the saloon.
The numbered sayings include number 1269, on a man who builds a better mouse-trap than his neighbor, credited to Emerson, and number 1272, on the wise man who shapes himself like water in the vessel it is poured into, credited to Japanese. Many carry a name after them, among them Blanchard and Observer. Numbers appear again in a list of subjects with numbered entries, under headings such as Portraits, Poverty, Power and Praise.
