About this book

Joe Dashwood returns from fighting London fires tired, wet, and covered in soot. In Life in the Red Brigade, R. M. Ballantyne sets the work of the London Fire Brigade beside the routines of Joe's household. At the station, Bob Clazie sleeps ready for the next call, while telegraph messages help distinguish a minor chimney fire from an emergency that needs engines.

At home, Joe's wife Mary washes clothes in the early hours, and their young daughter May becomes part of a family story shaped by duty and affection. Later, May and Fred Crashington play at being firefighters with an enormous old helmet Joe has bought. Their game brings trouble when Sparks visits, strikes Fred, and provokes Joe's anger. Mary's appeal for restraint adds another test of judgment to this children's adventure, which also shows Joe helping Ned by giving blood.
