About this book

Thirty-five cents a day brings Fred Byram to the coal breaker at Farley's, where he hopes to earn enough to support his mother. His first shift means sorting slate from coal amid dust and noise, followed by a demand from other boys that he pay for a treat. Sam Thorpe, a miner's helper, offers friendship and warns him about the dangers of debt at the company store.

James Otis builds this juvenile adventure around a mining settlement, combining the pressures of earning a living with bullying, loyalty and underground danger. In a later scene, an explosion leaves Fred, Sam and Skip trapped together, with limited light and uncertain prospects of rescue. The mining work gives the story a concrete setting, while the boys' conversations bring its moral choices into focus. Readers can approach it as a suspenseful account of young people facing adult responsibilities.
