About this book
The life of James Buchanan, identified as the fifteenth President of the United States, appears in a second volume bearing George Ticknor Curtis's name. The account describes a constituent congress elected by the people of the different States, which framed and adopted a republican constitution and provided for a popular election. The constitutional provision described in the account made the chief justice of Mexico the successor if the presidency became vacant, until the end of the term.
A letter signed John A. Dix discusses issuing Treasury notes payable in two years and convertible into stock when bids for stock are unsatisfactory. The discussion of the Ostend conference denies that greed for territorial expansion prompted the instructions that convoked the conference.
