About this book
The preface to Sidney Colvin’s Keats discusses the lack of a connected account of the poet’s life and work in accordance with the present state of knowledge. The preface explains that students and admirers had brought new information to light while some of the older information had been proved mistaken. The account of Keats’s childhood records the loss of his father, who died following a fall from his horse while riding home at night from Southgate.
The discussion of critical controversy notes that Leigh Hunt reprinted Reynolds’s letter with introductory words and later regretted not having done more. The textual discussion compares corrected passages in the Vision with the printed Hyperion and the draft of the poem preserved by Woodhouse.
