About this book
Andrew Marvell is by Augustine Birrell. The preface expresses indebtedness to editions of Marvell's Works, including The Works of Andrew Marvell, Esq., Poetical, Controversial, and Political. The book says Marvell took his B.A. degree in 1639, and that Marvell nowhere tells us what his University taught him or how.
The book quotes the lines “Blither than hare that hath escaped the hounds, The house prorogued, the chancellor rebounds.” The verse also brings in De Ruyter and Monk, with Monk pressed against the Dutch in his shirt. The book says it was as one of the poets encountered in the Poems on Affairs of State (fifth edition, 1703) that Marvell was best known during the greater part of the eighteenth century.
