About this book

A small girl bundled against the cold approaches Hoel Farm while its old watchdog, Bearhunter, keeps an eye on the pigs and goats. Lisbeth's encounter with him is anxious and comic: she trips over her long frock before recognizing his friendly manner. Hans Aanrud's Norwegian farm story gives the animals distinct tempers and follows a child's place among the people, chores and seasonal changes of a rural household.

Later scenes move to the mountain summer pasture, where milking and managing the herds fill the day. Lisbeth works alongside a milkmaid, while Ole and Peter attempt to make the stubborn goat Crookhorn follow a stronger companion. Their practical scheme becomes a lively contest of wills. Written for young readers, the story offers close observation of country work and the small incidents that make it memorable, with humor arising from both the children's plans and the animals' resistance.
