About this book
A scorching road across the moor becomes Huldah's chance to escape a harsh life in a caravan. Carrying baskets she has made and hoping to sell them for food, the frightened girl takes winding lanes to avoid being traced. Dick, a thin yellow dog with a keen nose, follows her scent and watches anxiously as exhaustion overtakes her. Mabel Quiller-Couch gives both the child's fear and the dog's loyalty a place in this children's novel.
Later scenes turn to the small pleasures of receiving kindness. With Miss Rose's help, Huldah buys a warm brown cloak, then spends her remaining shilling on treats for Mrs. Perry and Dick. Her wish to make a basket for Miss Rose brings gratitude back to her own skilled hands. Readers will find a story concerned with care for vulnerable children and animals, where everyday purchases and handmade gifts carry emotional weight.
