About this book
A Christmas invitation to New York sets the Clifford children buzzing, especially little Katie, known to her family as Flyaway. Horace tries to make Aunt Madge's letter a secret, but his eager sister gives away the news at breakfast while insisting she has kept it perfectly. Sophie May builds this children's story around family affection, childish misunderstandings and the difficult business of learning to listen. The visiting cousins, Prudy and Dotty Dimple, are also part of the holiday plans.
City streets bring a different test of Flyaway's judgment. A toy seller's friendliness vanishes when she has too little money, while a flower seller persuades her to exchange a fine handkerchief for a bouquet. The child's puzzled response makes the lesson concrete. Readers interested in older family stories will find playful dialogue alongside firm advice about self-will, respect and the gap between friendly words and fair treatment.
