About this book

In a New England village, young Lucretia has warm clothes, strict aunts and a school Christmas tree she longs to help decorate. Her classmates criticize her aunts' severity, leaving her defending the family while wishing for a share of the festivities. Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman begins this collection with a child's divided loyalties, bringing out the distance between adult ideas of duty and children's need for affection.

Dolls, patchwork, shoes, a basket and Thanksgiving supply subjects for other stories in the collection. Sarah Jane's treasured new doll makes her eager for her schoolmates' admiration, despite instructions to leave it at home. Village speech, household work and schoolroom friendships give these tales their particular texture.
