About this book

Little Foxes, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, has chapters headed Fault-Finding, Irritability, Repression, Persistence, Intolerance, Discourtesy and Exactingness. A character named Enthusius is described as very particular about his coffee and excessively disturbed if his meals are at all irregular. In one scene a speaker says “My dear, this tea is smoked: can’t you get Jane into the way of making it better?” and the reply is “My dear, I have tried; but she will not do as I tell her.”

A character addressed as Hero is told “you are too fond of mere fashionable and society notions,” and one addressed as Leander is told “you must confess that you are rather obstinate.” A passage on people who try themselves by ideal standards says they find themselves wanting, and that “there is no self-toleration or self-endurance.” The text adds that persons in a chronic quarrel with themselves are very apt to quarrel with others.
