About this book
Household Education is a work by Harriet Martineau. The preface says that a portion of the work appeared, some months ago, in papers in the People's Journal. The contents list names, among others, chapters called Old and Young in School and What the Schooling Is For.
The text says that when the writer was in America, three kinds of people were seen with their own notions of what it was to be a perfect man, notions as wide of each other as those of the Patriarch, the Spartan, and the Jew. The text says of all happy households, that is the happiest where falsehood is never thought of. The text says anxious parents, who are aware of the pains of suspicion, will place generous confidence in their children and receive what they say freely, unless there is strong reason to distrust the truth of any one. The text says great numbers of children, and young people yet growing, have been carried abroad by their parents, and asks at what cost, answering that in the writer's opinion it is at a fatal one.
