Little Frankie on a Journey

Birthday preparations give Frankie a chance to enjoy the rewards of learning to control his temper. His mother offers a party, and presents arrive from relatives and members of the household. A humming top, a toy cart and a handkerchief printed with pictures turn the celebration into a record of childhood pleasures. Madeline Leslie connects these small delights with lessons in gratitude, kindness and truthfulness.

During a later carriage ride, heavy rain raises doubts about whether the family can continue beyond a tavern stop. Mr. Gray finds a leather curtain that protects him from the weather, allowing the party to continue. The children fill their time with a hymn, talk of playing school and Frankie's reading from his birthday handkerchief. Prayers and verses place Christian teaching within ordinary family activities. The story offers readers a close look at the toys, learning habits and parental guidance presented in an older children's book.
