About this book
A first Atlantic crossing turns unexpectedly complicated for the young man nicknamed the Tyro when he meets a tearful passenger aboard the Clan Macgregor. She is fleeing an engagement arranged by her father, and his attempts to comfort her quickly become an exchange of sharp remarks. The departing liner gives them distance from the dock, but family authority proves harder to leave behind.
Samuel Hopkins Adams builds this comic novel around shipboard conversations, wounded pride and interference from shore. Judge Enderby, a lawyer with a ready quip and an insistence on payment, steps between Miss Wayne and the Tyro when the captain forbids them to speak. The story's log entries and playful narration make the voyage a setting for romantic misunderstandings and a young woman's argument for the right to make her own decisions.
