About this book

Quebec society and the breaking ice of the St. Lawrence give James De Mille's novel its mix of comic romance and adventure. A British lieutenant tells the story in a conversational voice, describing the attractions of Canadian courtship and the friendships of military life. A dangerous river crossing, a rescue and the puzzle of a woman's identity bring suspense alongside the visits, concerts and lively conversations at O'Halloran's home.

Jack Randolph brings a different sort of trouble to his friend Macrorie: his overlapping engagements have become known to the women concerned. He describes a letter demanding answers and an uncomfortable meeting with Miss Phillips after a visit from the widow. His attempts to explain and his wounded complaints turn the conversation into a comedy of romantic confusion.
