About this book
Samuel Hopkins Adams wrote a series of articles on the patent medicine evil, and this book reprints them from Collier's Weekly. The contents list sections titled The Great American Fraud, Peruna and the Bracers, Liquozone and The Subtle Poisons, with subheads on testimonials, a post-office report, and health boards and analyses.
One passage explains the 'red clause' in advertising contracts and mentions a contract with the Emporia Gazette, William Allen White's paper. Another tells of an agent for Paine's Celery Compound who asked a Chicago newspaper for strong testimonials to fill a full-page advertisement. The author also describes visiting the offices of the Ozomulsion Company, and a passage on North Dakota reports that the state's small newspapers refused to give way to threats from the patent-medicine association.
