About this book

Two restless guards at the Emerald City palace wonder why nobody fears them. The Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger boast about their strength and set out to make an impression, giving L. Frank Baum a comic way to explore the difference between fierce words and decent conduct. This collection of six short tales returns to the fairy land of Oz, with Dorothy and Toto, Tiktok, Jack Pumpkinhead, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman among its characters.

Elsewhere, Princess Ozma leaves the city with the Wizard to learn what troubles her people. A family in the mountains tells them about three imps who harass travelers, bringing royal responsibility into contact with unruly magic. The brief stories combine talking animals, odd companions and practical questions about kindness and behavior. Readers can enjoy the distinct episodes for their playful dialogue and the way ordinary concerns take unfamiliar shapes in a fantasy setting.
