About this book

A bright May morning beside the Huntly Burn becomes an encounter with magic when Thomas Learmont sees a richly dressed rider on a grey horse. The stranger identifies herself as the fairy queen, and Thomas's fascination puts him in danger. Elizabeth W. Grierson begins her collection with this meeting in the wooded landscape near the Eildon Hills, where birds, flowers and running water share the scene with enchantment.

Published in 1910 and intended for children, these retellings draw on Scottish folklore, including stories of brownies, talking animals and supernatural beings. The contents include the Black Bull of Norroway and the Seal Catcher and the Merman. In the middle excerpt, Robin Redbreast sets out to sing at the royal palace on Yule morning and answers a fox and a boy with caution. The collection offers readers both elaborate magical encounters and smaller animal tales in which watchfulness helps characters navigate danger.
