About this book
The preface presents an English translation of the autobiography of Louis Spohr, describing its subject as a violinist and composer. The autobiographical narrator describes meetings repeated almost every evening without prior agreement and unhappiness when the friend fails to appear. The narrator recounts speaking about his parents, his works and future plans, and the patron who supplied the means to accompany his instructor on his travels.
The narrator imagines having found the woman who could make his life happy, but describes an unconquered timidity preventing a declaration of love during their walks. A letter to Mr. Lüder records Spohr’s response to an opera by Berlioz heard in London, acknowledging some fine things while reporting that the music left him little edified.
