About this book
Belinda changes her mind about going out as a visit from Bellmour and Vainlove approaches. Before the men arrive, she and her cousin Araminta trade accusations, laughter and professions of affection. When Bellmour joins them, his talk of devotion becomes an argument about debts and payment, with Belinda matching each advance with a sharp reply. This English comedy makes courtship a contest over words, appearances and the right to interpret another person's feelings.
William Congreve's play offers readers the quick exchanges and shifting allegiances of comedy of manners. Stage directions, private asides and the bustle of servants give the conversation a physical setting as well as a social one. The accompanying introduction discusses the conventions of satiric comedy and the disputes over how such plays represent conduct. Together, the play and introduction offer a way to examine how wit turns affection, reputation and social pretence into material for the stage.
