About this book
Abel Gallup gives his baby a name meant to shape a career: Eloquent. A prosperous outfitter in Marlehouse, Abel pours his hopes for public life into his son, teaching him speeches and reverence for Liberal leaders. L. Allen Harker builds this social novel around the pressure of family ambition and the distinctions between a tradesman's household and the country families near Redmarley.
The comedy grows sharper when politics and personal acquaintance share the same room. Eloquent's visit to the Ffolliot household and a noisy election meeting bring local loyalties into focus. Grantly Ffolliot joins a party intent on disrupting the Liberal gathering, where Eloquent must speak through their interruptions. Readers interested in class, upbringing and political manners will find a story that sets the warmth of family attachment beside the vanity and rough behaviour of public life.
