About this book
The third of six volumes of Main Currents in Nineteenth Century Literature is titled The Reaction in France. The contents list names, among others, chapters on the Revolution, the Concordat, the principle of authority, Joseph de Maistre, Bonald and Chateaubriand. A line credited to John Stuart Mill says there is no philosophy possible where fear of consequences is a stronger principle than love of truth.
The text says that by the time the Legislative Assembly met, there were no longer any Estates, and that the nobles had emigrated. The text says Talleyrand insisted that, as no form of religion was prescribed by law, neither should any be prohibited by law. The text quotes a description of Death in which a phantom suddenly appears upon the threshold of the inexorable portals. The text says Schleiermacher is regarded as a free-thinker by orthodox Germany.
