About this book
Suspended Judgments, by John Cowper Powys, is subtitled Essays on Books and Sensations. The writer says that whether, in these latter days, we can achieve this thing as Montaigne achieved it, the fact remains that this is what we are all at the present time trying hard to do. The writer notes that it is easy to say Find yourself, know yourself, express yourself, but extremely difficult to do any of these things.
The writer asks what truth is in itself that it should be loved, and says that to love it for the pleasure of pursuing it is the temper dear to the immortal. The writer says that in our particular race there is far more danger of the beauty and significance of art perishing under crude and sentimental Nature-worship than of their being granted too large a place in our crowded house of thought.
