About this book
Major Frank begins with a letter from Sir Leopold van Zonshoven to Mr. William Verheyst, dated at The Hague in March, 1865. Leopold announces that he has suddenly come into an immense fortune, through an old aunt of his mother’s whom he had never heard of.
A letter signed Sophia Roselaer de Werve urges perseverance if difficulties arise over a proposed arrangement, as long as hope of success remains. The letter releases its recipient from the condition if he cannot bear to have a wife imposed on him whom he cannot love. The letter directs the recipient to consult lawyer Van Beek, who knows the writer’s intentions, should the worst happen and the fortune be at risk. Francis tells a visitor at the Castle to stay as long as possible if the visitor can fall in with the household’s ways, and says she needs fresh air and movement.
