About this book
The Home, or, Life in Sweden, translated by Mary Howitt, is listed among Fredrika Bremer's works. Chapter I, headed MORNING DISPUTE AND EVENING CONTENTION, has Judge Frank say, in a tone of vexation, that it is not worth while reading aloud to you if you keep yawning incessantly. A first-person entry says one change about to take place in the house cannot be anticipated without uneasiness: the arrival of a candidate of Philosophy, Jacob Jacobi, as tutor for the children.
A character labelled Mother says Louise, my good girl, what is amiss with you? I have never seen you thus before. You must tell me what is at your heart. The text describes a host who was celebrating his daughter's wedding as a fat, somewhat pursy man. Petrea prayed for people to assist at the carriage, and for some wine and fine bread for an invalid.
