About this book
In Paradise, Vol. I, is listed as No. XII in a Collection of Foreign Authors. A character named Felix asks an old fellow how he had the heart to leave poor Icarus without a sign of life for all those terribly long years. The sculptor, who had turned away and buried his face in a bunch of full-blown roses, asks, "How do you know that I have lived these terribly long years?"
A speaker recalls going on afterward in Heidelberg and Leipsic, and being fully three-and-twenty when he went back into his dear, dull, little home and passed his examination to enter the civil service. A scene shows a man who seizes both a woman's hands and clasps them so tightly that it pained her, though the pain did her good. A speaker tells someone that South Germans are really a fine race of men, and that everybody is so open, so true-hearted, in his négligé.
