About this book
G. Frederick Wright's volume deals with glaciers and with traces of human presence from the glacial period. One passage defends the finding of a small figure at Nampa in the Snake River region, saying that shells under the lava were identified by Mr. Dall of the United States Geological Survey as post-Tertiary or late Pliocene, and that there were only fifteen feet of lava, near the surface. Wright answers Mr. McGee's account of the evidence and describes the sand-pump used, a tube eight feet long.
Elsewhere the book describes fiords as submerged river gorges, partly silted up near their mouths or partly closed by terminal moraines. It says they are found in northwestern Europe, British Columbia and on the east coast of America north of Maine, and that the trough of the Hudson continues beyond New York Bay, as the United States Coast Survey showed in 1844. An index lists glaciers such as the Irish Sea Glacier and the Jakobshavn Glacier.
