About this book

Geological evidence for human antiquity is the subject of a work whose contents include fossil human remains, works of art, and bones of extinct mammals. The list of illustrations includes maps of land that would remain above water after subsidence and sea that would become land after a general rise.

An account of excavation through boulder clay records reindeer antlers found while a railway was being dug. A report of elephant tusks and bones found in clay with marine shells explicitly notes that the shell species are not given. The illustrations list includes views of chimpanzee and human brains. The report attributes the discovery of the elephant remains to information from Mr. Bald, giving their position as horizontal within the clay.

Charles Lyell

Charles Lyell (1797-1875) was a Scottish lawyer turned geologist whose work established uniformitarianism, the view that the earth's past can be read from processes visible in the present. A friend and mentor to Darwin, he pressed the case for an ancient earth long before he accepted evolution himself.
