About this book

An experienced sailor tells a private listener about something he has long hesitated to explain. His account takes them aboard the Helen B. Jackson, a New York four-masted schooner carrying lumber to the West Indies. Among its thirteen crew members are Jim and Jack Benton, capable twin brothers whose matching looks and shared clothes make them almost impossible to distinguish. The narrator's practical knowledge of sails, watches and shipboard work gives the unsettling events a firm everyday setting.

F. Marion Crawford builds this ghost story around uncertainty about what the crew has seen. A cook reacts in terror to a figure he believes is beside Jack, while an extra fork on a supper plate becomes troubling evidence for the other sailors. Familiar routines acquire a disturbing new meaning. Readers who enjoy supernatural fiction at sea will find a closely observed ship's company trying to understand signs that resist ordinary explanation.
