About this book
F. Marion Crawford's Paul Patoff begins with a narrator addressing a lady: "you have asked me to tell you a story," and admitting not yet knowing what it will be about. The book is divided into twenty-four chapters.
The scenes in the samples involve the brothers Paul and Alexander Patoff. In one, the two Russians meet two veiled Turkish ladies on a narrow path. Alexander says the Turkish words "Pek güzel," and the ladies' attendant strikes at him with a cane, and Paul catches the man's hand in the air. In another, a man tells the narrator that Alexander lies at the bottom of the Bosphorus, and the narrator replies that Paul has come back swearing he will find some trace of him. A third passage describes Madame Patoff's love for Alexander and his selfish, willful character.
