About this book

On a moonlit liner crossing the North Pacific, second mate Jimmy Farquhar talks with Ruth Osborne about the sea. Her pleasure in a comfortable voyage meets his memories of badly supplied sailing ships, bitter weather and exhausting work. Harold Bindloss sets their growing friendship against the difference between Ruth's prosperous family and Jimmy's hard-earned position as a ship's officer.

The story also follows Jimmy, Bethune and Moran as they locate a submerged wreck from their sloop, the Cetacea. Fog, a strong tide and freezing water make the salvage work uncertain, while the approach of winter puts pressure on their efforts to reach the vessel's strong-room. Set around Alaska and the North Pacific, this adventure novel combines maritime danger with a mystery about a wreck. Readers interested in sailing and salvage will find practical details of navigation, diving and teamwork alongside the personal tensions.
