Manon Lescaut
Abbe Prevost distilled a whole life of longing and ruin into this short, feverish novel, first published as part of a larger work in 1731. The Chevalier des Grieux, a promising young nobleman, throws away family, faith, and fortune the moment he meets Manon Lescaut, a beautiful and faithless girl bound for a convent. Their love drags them through gambling houses, prison cells, and finally into exile, each betrayal forgiven only to be repeated. Prevost refuses easy judgment, showing des Grieux as both victim and willing accomplice in his own downfall. The book scandalized readers and later inspired operas by Puccini and Massenet. Compact and emotionally raw, it stands among the earliest great novels of obsessive love. This free PDF and EPUB edition offers the complete tale.
