About this book
The House of the Combrays is by G. Lenotre. The preface recalls an evening in the winter of 1868 or 1869 when the speaker's father-in-law, Moisson, took up a book lying on the table and said, "Ah! you are reading Mme. de la Chanterie?" The text names the chauffeurs and the bands of Grands Gars and Coupe et Tranche, which under pretence of being Chouans attacked farms or isolated dwellings and inspired such terror.
The text says the Marquise, found wild with anxiety, had been told by Truffault's boy of the arrest of the Buquets and had not gone to bed, expecting to see the gendarmes appear. The Combrays reply that, in any case, Acquet ought to pay the bill.
