About this book

Charles Morton Aikman's Manures and the Principles of Manuring is dedicated to Sir John Bennet Lawes of Rothamsted and Sir J. Henry Gilbert, whose investigations the dedication says the work embodies in part. The copy here is marked as a third impression, dated 1910.

One section tells how Van Helmont grew a plant for five years in weighed soil watered only with rain-water, found that the plant weighed 169 lb. 3 ounces while the soil lost about 2 ounces, and concluded that the source of plant-food was water. Under Digby's Theory, a discourse spoken at Gresham College in 1660 is quoted, crediting a balsam in the air for growth. Another passage compares the water and nitrogen in the excreta of sheep, horse, pig and cow. A section titled Experiments by the Author reports turnip-manuring trials in the South and West of Scotland.
