Map of Bones is the second Sigma Force novel from James Rollins, published in 2005. The book picks up the thriller series that began with Sandstorm and continues to develop the Sigma Force team and the wider DARPA covert operations universe that Rollins would build out across many more books. In this entry, the central hook involves the strange theft of relics from the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. Specifically the bones of the Three Magi, the kings whose remains have been venerated at Cologne since the medieval period.

The theft is accompanied by the deaths of the worshippers in the cathedral, all of whom have been killed in a way that suggests technology far beyond what conventional weapons can produce. The investigation pulls in Sigma Force, with Painter Crowe coordinating from headquarters and the new field team, including Gray Pierce and Monk Kokkalis, taking their first major case in the series. The plot moves through Germany, Italy, and across the wider European Catholic landscape as the Sigma team tries to figure out what the antagonists actually want from the bones and what ancient power they may be trying to unlock.

What Rollins does well in books like this is balance. The historical material on the Three Magi, on the medieval Catholic relic tradition, and on the various secretive orders within the church is well researched. The science element involves chemistry and physics that the team has to work through to understand what is actually being attempted. The action sequences move at the pace Sigma Force readers expect, with set pieces in cathedrals, Italian villas, and the kind of underground locations that the genre rewards.

Map of Bones also continues to develop the wider Sigma Force mythology that the first book established. The recurring antagonist organization called the Guild that runs through many of the early Sigma novels makes its appearance here, and the team dynamics between Painter, Gray, Monk, and the supporting cast begin to take the shape they will hold across the rest of the series.

For longtime Sigma Force fans, Map of Bones is one of the foundational entries that established the series formula. For new readers, this is a strong second entry to read after Sandstorm, with the wider universe still being constructed in ways that reward starting at the beginning.
