The Starless Crown

James Rollins built his career writing the Sigma Force thrillers, fast paced novels that mix military action with archaeology and big speculative ideas. The Starless Crown is a different kind of book. It is the first volume of his Moonfall Saga, an epic fantasy series that gives Rollins room to build a world from the ground up rather than borrow from the present one.

The setting is a tidally locked planet where one face perpetually burns under the sun and the other freezes in eternal night. Civilization survives only in the narrow temperate band between them. A young scholar named Nyx, a girl raised among bog farmers and trained as a holy seer, begins having visions that suggest the moon itself is on a collision course with their world. The visions are dismissed at first, then they start to look like prophecy, and Nyx finds herself hunted by people who would rather she stop talking about it.

Rollins assembles a solid ensemble around her. A disgraced prince, a thief with secrets of his own, an academic who knows more than he should, and a violent knight who may or may not be on the right side. The plot moves between several point of view characters in chapters that tend to end on hooks, which is exactly the rhythm Rollins’s thriller readers will recognize.

The worldbuilding is detailed without becoming a lecture. There are bronze winged gods, strange sea creatures, ancient orders of knowledge, and a magic system that feels grounded in the planet’s physics. For readers who liked Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive or Robin Hobb’s Farseer books, The Starless Crown is a strong start to a saga that promises to grow much larger.
