About this book
Writing from captivity in San Augustin in June 1670, Margaret Tudor hopes her account will reach her uncle, Dr. William Scrivener. She recalls a sea voyage with him and their search for news of her father in Barbadoes. Storms and damaged ships delay their passage toward Port Royal, while her affection grows for John Rivers, a fellow passenger who offers to help them.
Annie T. Colcock presents this historical romance as Margaret's own record of danger and uncertainty. Rivers is held in chains, and Margaret faces tense encounters with the Governor's lady and Don Pedro Melinza. At a military review, an exchange over a ribbon becomes a pointed act of defiance. Her quick replies give the account a personal edge amid disputes over her future. An opening note links names and incidents to colonial records, adding a historical frame to a story of confinement, loyalty and resistance.
